Even though Willie was determined to succeed, and backed by the rural population he still was lacking, and didn’t quite have what it took to be a governor just yet. His speeches were bland, and struck no chord with the listeners. He would practice in his room for hours, but not even that helped enough. One night he became so upset, because he realized his campaign was basically a joke, that he drank himself into a stupor. The following morning he was in such bad condition Jack was worried he wouldn't be able to get him to the barbecue event to make his speech. As a quick fix Jack made Willie drink again, and as a result Willie spoke his little heart out that day. He let his emotions fly, and even though it marked his withdrawal from that race, it would give birth to his new career down the road.
