The Chronicle is the local newspaper of Mason County. The newspaper is supposed to be the public's source of true, unbiased information which helps get the word out and keep those in power in check. However in the book it shows how easily corrupted these "non-fiction" journalists can be. For example Willies right hand man, Jack Burden, used to be a big editor for the Chronicle newspaper. He is now the go-to-guy for Willie on blackmail though. This shows the politicians ability in the book to manipulate the public.
